Intel Viiv, the CExxxx series and the history of the Multimedia Desktop Computer

When desktops computers first emerged in the early 80’s their primary functions where spreadsheets and word processor functions. First in the early 90’s came the rise of the desktop PC as a platform for multimedia experience. People began adding sound cards to their pc’s , pc games become realistic. The invention of the mp3 format lead to a revolution in music consumption where consumers mainly the youth started to listen to music on their PC's instead of the old hi-fi sound system. Then in the middle of the nineties the internet sweet up and the most important function of the pc became to use it with internet surfing.  Around the end nineties graphic cards were becoming so fast and their price were now often higher than the price of the main CPU in the desktop system. Consumers were using their desktop pc for high intensive gaming that before hand could only be experienced at special entertainment halls. At the end of the nineties the DVD format was cracked and the popular DIVX format that made it possible to rip and download DVD movies came about, suddenly consumers where staring to watch movies on their desktop pc's, instead of their old TV’s. the true multimedia experience of sound visual and audio has been encompassed. In 2000 TV tuner became popular and companies such as Pinnacle, Tivo and Haugpage launched software and hardware that made it possible to record , watch and more importantly time shift the viewing of TV channels, people were now using their pc’s for watching TV also and when then would like to watch it, cutting out commercials at the same time too.

Intel showcases first CE Device with  Media Processor CE 3100 SOC chipset at CETCL and Intel Sign Strategic Cooperation Agreement to Develop Next Generation Internet TV, with Yahoo and Toshiba alsoI

Intel introduces Sodaville CE 4100, a SOC approach to the digital home, based upon the Atom processor.   In terms of media, Sodaville adds a hardware accelerator block. It is capable of decoding two simultaneous MPEG2, H.264 or VC1 streams at 1920x1080-progessive pixel resolutions at 60 frames per second. It also has two 533 MHz audio DSPs.
